Christmas Bird Count - City Creek Canyon

Feeling up to a winter wonderland adventure and seeing unique birds? Join Tracy Aviary and Utah Division of Wildlife bird experts to hike City Creek Canyon.

Choose Your Adventure

All Christmas Bird Count (CBC) participants will meet at the same location: City Creek Canyon Trailhead. From there, you are can choose one of three routes.

Upper City Creek Canyon

Hiking Level: Difficult From the trailhead, we will carpool to and park at the Water Treatment Plant. This is where the hiking begins. It is a remote back country area with no services or cell signal in sometimes deep snow.

What birds will you see? In years past we have seen Golden-crowned Kinglets, Northern Pygmy-Owls, Dusky and Ruffed Grouse, Pacific Wrens, Red Crossbills, Clark’s Nutcrackers and more high elevation species.

Lower City Creek Canyon

Hiking Level: Easy (~3 mi) This group will carpool into the canyon and park at the Water Treatment Plant. From there, CBCers will walk the paved, plowed road out back to the cars.

What birds will you see? Possible birds include: Wild Turkeys, Northern Goshawks, Bald and Golden Eagles, Peregrine Falcons, Pacific Wrens ,  and more.

Bonneville Shoreline Trail / Capitol Hill

Hiking Level: Moderate (~3 mi) From the City Creek Canyon, this group will take the Bonneville Shoreline trail heading west up into the foothills above Capitol Hill. It is a good hike and steep in places, sometimes the trail can be icy and some years the snow can get deep.

What birds will you see? Possible birds include: Rosy-Finches, Canyon Wrens , Golden Eagles and other raptors and more.
