Week 10 - Lesson

Get to know the point count survey protocol

This week’s lesson is a little different than the previous weeks. Instead of learning bird identification, we will do an overview of the survey protocol, tools in the field, and how to do the survey. Then, you will use an online simulation to apply the bird identification skills you’ve learned and practice a point count. Don’t sweat it; these are simply videos that you are able to replay, rewind, and fast forward to review the material at your own pace. There are two Parts to this lesson. Scroll down to take this lesson.

Part 1

Point Count Surveys 101: This video is an online lesson that covers the tools available to you in the field, the survey protocol, and how to use your datasheet. Video duration: 50 minutes.

Part 2

Point Count Practice: This part consists of two videos. The first video explains the activity in more detail. The second video is a simulation of a point count in Galena Soo'nkahni Preserve, a field site that straddles the border of Draper and Riverton.

  1. Read this: How to use this activity

  2. Download the Datasheet (here) and the Bird Code List (here)

    • Prepare your datasheet with your name code (for ex, EXM=Esteban Miller) and the site code (GAL) before proceeding to the next step.

    • Set your HIIT Timer for a 2-minute survey with 1-minute intervals.

  3. Click here to do your point count

    • Beginners - Do not hesitate to replay the video and try, try again!

    • Advanced - This is a review for you. We challenge you to replay the video simply to check your answers!

  4. Submit your datasheet to conservation@tracyaviary.org

    • Subject: Datasheet + Name Code

    • Attach: Datasheet to the e-mail
